Dementia syndromes are slowly progressive impairments of several complex mental faculties, leading to loss of autonomy. They are to be distinguished from global alterations in cerebral functions (encephalopathies and confusional syndromes), isolated impairment of a cognitive func tion, or cognitive complaints with no functional repercussions.
